Praying Mantis Martial Arts Institute

Charter

The primary goal of the Praying Mantis Martial Art Institute is promoting Chinese martial arts as well as Chinese culture, philosophy and to share an authentic and effective fighting system. Any person who is willing to abide by the school rules and has a desire to learn may join. All classes are conducted by Master Tony Chuy.

We offer instruction in four general areas:

Praying Mantis Gung Fu
A complete program from basic to advanced levels. This style is known for its speed, agility and flexibility. It utilizes both long range and close quarter tactics, grabbing and trapping strategies and take-down techniques. Practicing this style develops coordination, builds up good reflexes and improves mental focus in order to remain calm in any fighting situation. Students from absolute novices in the martial arts to previous practitioners of other martial arts are welcome.
Grappling, Locking and Release Techniques
This twenty-four-class program, also known as “Chin Na” in Mandarin Chinese, offers knowledge and techniques to defend against grabs, holds and chokes and to immobilize assailants with effective subduing and controlling techniques. Students will learn how to use minimal force and scientific theories of leverage, momentum, angular force, change of direction, pressure points and joint-lock methods to take down assailants. This is an excellent program for those who want to learn some effective techniques without committing to a long term enrollment in a martial arts program. This program is especially recommended for women and law enforcement agents who frequently encounter dangerous, close-contact situations.
Tai Chi for Health and Self-Defense
This gentle, classical exercise form is designed to improve health, develop inner energy (chi) and teach how to use minimal force against a stronger opponent. This program teaches mental concentration and relaxation as well as practical, but non-aggressive self-defense techniques. By practicing this system, one will relax the body, reduce stress and improve circulation. This program is suitable for people who seek a less strenuous activity or those who are physically limited but wish to gain the benefits of health and self-defense.
Traditional Weaponry
The school offers traditional Chinese weapons training including saber, staff, spear, sword, daggers, 2-sectional staff, 3-sectional staff, 7-sectional chain whip and long-handled broadsword (halberd). These classes are open to other martial arts stylists who wish to learn a Chinese weapon set without going through the full training program that our school offers. Each program lasts from 10 to 15 classes.
